Macedonian is the language of the Macedonians, one of the Slavic languages. In genetic terms, this language is closest to Bulgarian, together with which it forms an eastern subgroup within the South Slavic language group. By typological features it is similar to the languages of the Balkan Union.
Today this language is spoken mainly in North Macedonia. Small groups of Macedonian speakers also live in:
- Albania
- Bulgaria
- Greece
- Serbia
- Croatia
And also in a number of Western European countries, USA, Canada, Australia and other countries. Macedonian has been the official language of North Macedonia since 1991.
