Pula currency

The pula is the official currency of Botswana. Fun fact: in translation from the Tswana language, the name of this currency means “let it rain”- the state’s greeting and motto also sounds like this. 1 pula consists of 100 thebe.

A brief history of pula currency

In 1966, Botswana gained independence from Great Britain and was part of monetary unions: first in the sterling zone, and later in the rand zone. Botswana did not have its own currency. In 1974, it was announced the imminent withdrawal of the state from the monetary union with South Africa and the beginning of the development of a national currency. Pula was introduced on August 23, 1976, replacing the rand. The exchange was carried out in a ratio of 1:1. In 2005, as a result of inflation, the official currency of the state of Botswana fell in price by 12%, but it still remains one of the “strong” currencies on the African continent!
