The forint (HUF) is the official currency of Hungary, whose ISO 4217 code is HUF (Hungarian Forint). The currency was put into circulation on August 1, 1946, before that the pengo was in circulation. In 2015, the forint entered the list of freely convertible currencies used for settlements in the international interbank system CLS. The name of the currency comes from the name of the city of Florence, where a gold coin called fiorino d’oro was minted since the 13th century. Every banknote now in existence features a famous Hungarian leader or politician on the front and a place or event associated with him on the back.
