The hryvnia (UAH) has been the national currency of Ukraine since 1996. It was named after the ancient Russian hryvnia, an ancient monetary unit, which was a silver ingot. The hryvnia is divided into 100 kopecks (Ukrainian kopіyka). The letter code of the Ukrainian currency in the ISO 4217 standard is UAH and the digital code is 980. The word “hryvnia” in Sanskrit “griiv’aa” means the back of the head. Such kinship is associated with an ornament in the form of a hoop made of precious metals, which was worn on the back of the neck (historians believe so). Some historians believe that the hryvnia appeared in the 11th century as a currency in Kievan Rus.
