The rand is a freely convertible currency, which is the national currency of the Republic of South Africa. It is also the common currency of the countries of the Multilateral Monetary Agreement, which, in addition to South Africa, includes Lesotho, Namibia and Eswatini. The currency was put into circulation in 1961, simultaneously with the proclamation of the Republic of South Africa and its withdrawal from the British Commonwealth.
