Malta is the largest of the 3 islands that make up the Maltese archipelago. The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA), (formerly Lotteries and Gaming Authority) is the regulatory body of Malta.
It is the MGA that regulates most types of gambling in Malta: land-based casinos, slot machines, bookmakers, lotteries and online casino providers.
The main task of this body is to monitor the fairness and transparency of the games. Their duties also include the investigation and prevention of criminal activities: money laundering, corruption, as well as the protection of underage and vulnerable players.
Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has far-reaching powers and is linked to the Maltese police force. This regulatory body may impose fines and revoke licenses for failure to fulfill its obligations.
License types
MGA issues different licenses for gambling activities for both B2C and B2B directions. B2C licenses are divided into 4 types. Each type gives operators permission to provide different types of casino games. Operators are not required to submit separate applications for each type of license. They just need to add a new type of games to offer. They do not need to go through the licensing process again. Licenses are currently valid for 10 years.
